Birmingham Fashion Week 2012 – The Jenn Butler Interview

Y.U.R.I. Magazine

We met the fabulous Jenn Butler almost a year ago as she and her brilliant staff prepared to launch Y.U.R.I Magazine, a bi-monthly glossy headquartered in Birmingham, AL and filled with fashion and satorial appeal for the 18-35 set.  Since that time, Jenn has proved her style and editorial mettle and we’re excited to profile her in celebration of Birmingham Fashion Week 2012.

Tell us about starting Y.U.R.I. Magazine:
I came up with the idea of Y.U.R.I. during my undergraduate years at Miles College. It was during the summer and I was enrolled in my senior project class. Most of my classmates were doing commercial or radio shows. I’d always loved fashion and I also like designing graphic layouts, so I decided to do a magazine. From there I knew; this is what I want to do. It took me a few years to launch the first issue of the magazine, but it was all worth it.

Y.U.R.I is such a unique name, tell us more:
The name Y.U.R.I. means Young. Unique. Respectful. Individuals. We represent that theme throughout the magazine with bi-monthly articles on fashion, relationships, dining, and career, while giving prominence to health issues.

Jenn Butler

Describe your fashion sensibility/style:
My fashion style is very versatile. I love oversized handbags and earrings. I wear anything from pink (my favorite color nail polish) to black. I love heels, sandals and boots. I’m not a sneakers girl, I dress for the occasion. And if it’s cute, I will wear it.

Where does a fashion magazine editor love to shop?
I’m such a makeup girl. I love MAC! It’s my favorite makeup. I love major department stores such as Belk and Macy’s. Also, Bakers Shoes, TJ Maxx, Target and Aldo. I do a lot of eBay shopping and I love shopping online because it’s quick and convenient. But I’ll shop anywhere, from Forever 21, H & M to Saks Fifth Avenue. If the clothes and accessories are chic, I’ll shop there!

Tell us about Y.U.R.I.’s upcoming fashion activities and/or events:
We are currently preparing Taste, Fashion and Art event on Saturday, March 3rd at 6:00 at The District in downtown Birmingham located at 2212 Second Avenue North Birmingham, AL 35203. The event is to bring fashion forward people and artist together for an evening of socializing and networking. The admission cost is free, however; donations will be accepted for the tornado victims. (Checks payable to American Red Cross.) You can also find more information about Taste, Fashion and Art at Birmingham Weekly Magazine.

We’re preparing to attend Miami Fashion Week in March, as well as organizing our one year launch anniversary events for Y.U.R.I. Magazine.
